Race analysis, frame by frame
Load your race file and, if you have it, the footage from on board. The track is required; video is optional and can be added later.
Race file
Vakaros .vkx, Velocitek .vtk, or a .gpx or .fit from Strava, a watch or a phone. The format is detected automatically. Neither has heel or a compass in it, so those overlay fields are left out for one.
Video file
.mp4 or .mov (H.264), as recorded by most action
cameras and phones — plus low-resolution .lrv proxy files.
Add several at once if the camera split the recording into parts.
Sail Smarter Race Analytics is an independent project. Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Vakaros or Velocitek — those names, and the VKX and VTK file formats, are referred to only to describe compatibility. All trade marks are the property of their respective owners.
Wind direction
Everything downstream — which leg is upwind, what counts as a tack, where the mark roundings are — hangs off this one number.
Line up the video
One number links the footage to the track. We try to work it out from the camera's own GPS first.
Manual sync
Park the video on a moment you recognise, tell us what it is, and that pins everything else.
Or: when did the recording start?
Often the quickest way in. If nothing distinctive happens in the first ten minutes of the footage there is no landmark worth hunting for — but the time you pressed record is on the file, on the camera, or in your head. Clip time zero is that moment, so nothing else needs measuring.
The race
Where it happened
Click any marker to see it; double-click to play it.Every manoeuvre, overlaid
Each line is one manoeuvre in the wind-relative frame, all sharing the moment of the turn. Up the page is upwind. Click a line to select it, double-click to play it.
In order
No video is synced for this race yet.
Both clips are lined up on the moment of the manoeuvre, so 0 s is the turn in each. Play runs them together. Social video export saves the pair stacked one above the other in an upright frame, trimmed to the part both clips cover.
