Tool 1

Single Boat Analysis

Your own race, taken apart: tacks and gybes compared, mark roundings, leg-by-leg speed and VMG, start-line analysis and tidal vectors.

Takes one race file — Vakaros .vkx or Velocitek .vtk / .vcc.

Tool 2

Tuning Partner Analysis

Two boats from the same race, head to head: shared track map, speed and VMG difference, polar overlay and a synced start-line replay.

Takes two files from the same race — .vkx, .vtk, .vcc, .gpx or .fit, in any combination.

Tool 3

Fleet Analysis

Three to ten boats from the same race: one track map, a column per boat in every table, and replays with the whole fleet on them. Live Wind Prediction reads the breeze off the fleet as it shifts and re-runs every number against it.

Takes three to ten files from the same race — .vkx, .vtk, .vcc, .gpx or .fit, in any combination.

Tool 4

Events

Fleet Analysis for a whole regatta. Create the event, send one link, and everyone uploads their own race file — up to 20 boats on one side by side data comparison and one fleet replay, with the wind read live off the whole fleet.

Takes a file per sailor from the same racing — .vkx, .vtk, .vcc, .gpx or .fit. The first upload of a day must be a .vkx or .vtk.

Tool 5

Video Overlay Analysis

Your onboard footage played back with the instrument data drawn over it — starts, tacks, gybes, mark roundings and whole legs, each rated for the distance it cost. Compare two manoeuvres and export the pair as an upright social video.

Takes one race file (.vkx, .vtk, .vcc, .gpx or .fit) plus your footage — .mp4 or .mov (H.264), including GoPro .lrv proxy files.

Tool 6

Training Session Analysis

For any session with no start line — a coaching day, a tuning session, or a race you didn't run the timer on.

Takes one track — .gpx or .fit from Strava, a watch or a phone, or a .vkx / .vtk / .vcc from an instrument.

Tool 1 · Single Boat Analysis

What one race file tells you

Tack and gybe comparison chart from Vakaros VKX race data

Tack & gybe comparison

Every tack and gybe analysed and overlaid, so you can see which manoeuvre cost you distance.

Tidal vector prediction map from Vakaros VKX race data

Tidal vectors

Tidal vector predictions using STW and SOG to understand tidal behaviour in race area

Mark rounding comparison chart from Vakaros VKX race analysis

Mark roundings

Compare every top and bottom mark rounding side by side.

Speed box plot for a single upwind leg from Vakaros VKX race analysis

Leg analysis

Every leg compared side by side

Start replay

Watch the approach and the gun back second by second — distance to the line, the countdown, and time to burn, the surplus that says slow down or go now.

Live Wind Prediction

In Fleet and Event Analysis: read the wind off the whole fleet as it shifts, rather than using one direction for the race, and re-run every number against it.

Tool 2 · Tuning Partner Analysis

Tuning Partner Analysis — compare two boats head to head

Racing against a tuning partner? Upload both race files (Vakaros or Velocitek, any combination) and see exactly where you gained or lost ground — track comparison, speed & VMG diff, leg-by-leg and mark-rounding comparisons, tack/gybe efficiency and a polar overlay, all side by side.

Two-boat track comparison map from Tuning Partner Analysis

Shared track map

Both boats' tracks on one map, with start line and manoeuvres marked, so you can see the race unfold side by side.

Polar overlay comparing two boats from Tuning Partner Analysis

Polar overlay

Both boats' polar curves on one chart, port and starboard, so you can spot exactly where one boat was faster.

Start-line replay showing both boats' tracks from Tuning Partner Analysis

Start-line replay

Watch both boats' starts side by side, synced to the same clock, with a live leader indicator.

Tool 4 · Video Overlay Analysis

Video overlay analysis — your race footage with the data on top

Add your onboard footage and Sail Smarter lines it up with your Vakaros or Velocitek track, then plays any moment of the race back with the numbers burned over the picture — time to gun, distance to the line, SOG, STW, VMG, heading, COG and heel, all read straight from your own file.

Sail Smarter video overlay replay of a race start, showing time to gun, distance to the start line, SOG, VMG, heading, COG and heel over onboard footage, with a speed and VMG trace underneath
Replay starts, manoeuvres or entire legs with data overlay
Every tack overlaid in the wind-relative frame, with two manoeuvres picked out ready to compare
Select and compare manoeuvres side by side
Two tacks played side by side, each with its own data overlay and the distance lost in metres
Both clips synced to the moment of the turn, each with the distance it cost you in metres

Your footage never leaves your computer — the video is opened, trimmed and overlaid inside your own browser, so there's nothing to upload and nothing to wait for.

Vakaros VKX race analysis — FAQ

What is Sail Smarter?

Sail Smarter (in full, Sail Smarter Race Analytics) is a free, browser-based race-analysis tool built for sailors using Vakaros racing instruments. Upload your Vakaros VKX race file and it turns your raw GPS and instrument data into a full race debrief — tack and gybe comparisons, boat speed, tidal vector predictions and leg-by-leg breakdowns.

What is a Vakaros VKX file?

A VKX file is the raw race data recorded by a Vakaros Atlas instrument — GPS position, boat speed, heading and heel, logged throughout a race.

What does Vakaros VKX data analysis show you?

Upload your VKX file and Sail Smarter Race Analytics turns it into a full race debrief: tack and gybe comparisons, boat speed (SOG and STW), tidal vector predictions, leg-by-leg breakdowns and mark-rounding comparisons — all worked out from your own race data.

Is this a replacement for a sailing coach?

No — it's not a replacement for a coach, but it gives you the same kind of tack-by-tack, leg-by-leg detail a coach would look for, straight from your own Vakaros VKX data, so you can spot what won or lost you time before your next race or coaching session.

Is my VKX data private?

Yes — your file is sent securely to our server for analysis and the results are returned straight to your browser. We don't store your race file, and we never sell or share your data.

Can I put my Vakaros data over my sailing video?

Yes — that's Video Overlay Analysis. Drop in your VKX file and your onboard footage and it lines them up, then replays any start, tack, gybe or mark rounding with speed, VMG, heading, heel and distance to the start line drawn over the picture. It runs in your browser and your video is never uploaded. See how the Vakaros video overlay works.

Does this work with anything other than a Vakaros?

Yes — Sail Smarter Race Analytics reads Vakaros Atlas VKX and Velocitek VTK and VCC race files. Either device works on its own for Single Boat Analysis, and any combination — two Velociteks, or a Velocitek and a Vakaros — works for Tuning Partner Analysis and Fleet Analysis. It also reads GPX and FIT, which almost any watch, phone app or handheld can export. See the devices and file formats page for details.

Can I analyse a GPX or FIT file from Strava?

Yes — that's what sailing GPX data analysis is for. A GPX holds position and time and nothing else, so speed and course are worked out from how far the boat moved between fixes, and there's no start line, no heel and no compass in the file to work with. Everything that doesn't depend on those still runs: tacks and gybes detected and costed in metres, leg-by-leg speed and VMG, polars and tidal vectors. You supply the wind direction, and it then reads the wind back off your own tacking angles and offers to fine-tune it. See a worked example.
